Impacts of Chemistry

Pennsylvania Chemical Industry image

Pennsylvania Chemical Industry Council (PCIC) members are leading the charge with innovations in sustainable manufacturing production with significant investments in advanced recycling, energy efficiency and carbon emissions reduction technologies.

Simply put, our industry is talking the talk and walking the walk when it comes to making the world a better place

The chemical industry in Pennsylvania is a significant economic driver, supporting high-wage jobs, generating tax revenue for communities, and advancing sustainable solutions.

The most important contribution of our industry is that nearly every aspect of modern life quality relies on chemistry. Chemicals and plastics are responsible for most healthcare products and medical equipment, renewable energy, high-performing building materials, food packaging, electronics, clothing, vehicles, and more.

Responsible companies achieve trifecta of record safety performance

The American Chemistry Council announced that its members have achieved a historic trifecta of safety performance.

Notable achievements, based on the most current available member data, are below.

Transportation Safety

The safe distribution and handling of chemicals is a critical priority for ACC and its members. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, close to 1 million shipments of hazardous materials occur daily.

Record Performance

ACC members reported the lowest-ever number of distribution incidents. Since 2017, ACC members have achieved a 35% reduction in distribution incidents.

Process Safety

The Responsible Care® Process Safety Code enables a culture of process safety from operations to management systems and leadership.

Record Performance

ACC members reported a record low number of Tier 1 process safety events. Since 2017, ACC members have reduced Tier 1 process safety events by 22%.

Worker Safety

For more than a decade, Responsible Care® companies have averaged less than one recordable injury or illness per 100 employees annually. This is better than major sectors, including manufacturing, retail, agriculture, food stores and general merchandising.

For the second consecutive year, ACC members reported a record-low total recordable injury and illness incidence rate. Since 2017, ACC members have reduced TRIR by more than 24%.

Chemistry Creates, America Competes

Americans want a stronger, more affordable America. America’s chemical manufacturers can help.

Supporting more domestic chemical production will help bolster our sector’s trade surplus, bring stability to the domestic economy and strengthen U.S. competitiveness across global markets. A smarter, pro-growth, more predictable regulatory process is imperative for producing more at home.

We join our partners at the American Chemistry Council to advocate for the Trump Administration and Congress to champion science-based policy solutions across all levels of government:

  • Drive predictable, transparent, fact-based policies
  • Foster more production in the U.S., not elsewhere
  • Prioritize energy independence and bolster our sector’s trade surplus
  • Safeguard our communities and incentivize job creation
  • Protect our national security and supply chains

Growing U.S. chemical production will help make America the world’s manufacturing superpower. Let’s work together to keep America strong and grow chemical manufacturing right here at home.

New Report Shows U.S. Manufacturing’s Deep Dependence on Plastic

A recent economic analysis by the American Chemistry Council reveals that plastic is indispensable to critical U.S. industries – from automotive and aerospace to healthcare and electronics – that employ nearly 5 million Americans and pay over $391 billion in U.S. wages. These critical industries are reliant on plastic and cannot operate without a robust and reliable supply.

Key findings from ACC’s report, Plastics in American Manufacturing:

  • Nearly 27% of U.S. manufacturing output comes from sectors where plastic makes up 5% or more of material inputs.
  • The plastic manufacturing sector employs 670,000 Americans and pays nearly $50 billion in wages.
  • The plastic resin sector holds a nearly $22 billion trade surplus, making it one of the limited U.S. industries that exports more than it imports.
